Sunnyvale is just north of Cupertino and also borders Santa Clara, Los Altos, and Mountain View.  It is the second largest city in Santa Clara County with a population of approximately 132,000.  The median household income is $74,500.  It has a diverse population, and 39 percent of its residents were born outside the U.S.  Males slightly outnumber females.  Half of the population over 25 have a college degrees.  Sunnyvale enjoys a mild year round climate with the northern edge of the city being cooler due to its proximity to San Francisco Bay.

Like most of the county agriculture was the dominant industry first with wheat farming which later gave way to fruit orchards.  A water tower painted like a Libby’s Fruit Cocktail can be seen near downtown Sunnyvale as a reminder of the city’s past.   During World War II the focus began to shift away from farming to high tech. 

Today it is a crucial part of the Silicon Valley and is home to many high tech companies, both large and small.  Palm, Inc., Advanced Micro Devices, Yahoo!, Sandisk, and Maxim all have their corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale.  Defense and aerospace companies Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Honeywell all have a strong presence as well.  Onizuka Air Force Station is the primary artificial satellite control facility for the U.S. Armed Forces.

Sunnyvale high schools are part of the Fremont Union School District which services Cupertino and San Jose as well.  The district offices and Fremont High School are situated in Sunnyvale.  Fremont High School opened in 1925, and prior to that its campus served as a military base. The elementary schools are part of two school districts, Cupertino Union Elementary and Santa Clara Unified School Districts which both serve multiple communities.

There are several museums including The Iron Works Museum is located at Northrop Grumman and is noted for its early 20th century ironworks from the Joshua Hendy Iron Works, Sunnyvale’s first non agricultural business established in 1906.  The Lace Museum is one of two museums in the western U.S. devoted entirely to lace.  It houses an extensive collection of lace and lace making tools and provides ongoing instruction in lace making.  Want to learn more about Sunnyvale?  Visit the Sunnyvale Historical Museum and see exhibits and photos from its past.

Sunnyvale has an outstanding Community Center with adult and youth classes and a Senior Center with classes and activities.  There are two public golf courses with a total of 27 holes.  Numerous parks around the city provide picnic facilities and tennis courts.  Baylands Park has 70 acres of pathways, picnic areas, and recreation, plus over 100 acres set aside as a wetlands preserve for plants and wildlife.  There are many fine and casual restaurants around the city.
