The University of Santa Clara is a private university run by the Jesuits and is noted for its academics. It is built around the historic Mission Santa Clara and is the oldest university in the state of California. It has a renown law and engineering programs with an outstanding masters program. Many of its graduates are well known in politics, sports, and business. Mission College is also located in Santa Clara and is a public community college with over 70 programs. It is well known for its hospitality management program. The public school system is served by the Santa Clara Unified School District with schools covering grades K-12 although a small portion of the southern part of the city is served by the Cupertino Union Elementary District. 46 per cent of the population over 25 are college graduates.

The city offers a variety of recreational and leisure activities. Great America is a large amusement park in northern Santa Clara. The Triton Museum of Art was founded in 1965 and moved to newer, larger quarters in 1987. The Santa Clara Convention Center hosts numerous trade shows that are open to the public throughout the year. This award winning facility is located in the high tech corridor and is also used for meetings and conventions. The Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club is part of the Convention Center Complex and features a championship 18-hole golf course, driving range, putting green, and lighted tennis courts. The International Swim Center is home to the renown Santa Clara Swim Club and the world famous Aqua Maids synchronized swim team. The Community Recreation Center provides activities and classes for all age groups. Numerous parks offer hiking, picnicking, swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball in addition to dedicated dog and skate parks. There is also a year round farmers market.
