San Jose Real Estate

San Jose was the first town established by the Spanish when they colonized the area that was to later become the state of California.  With an estimated an estimated population of 930,000 it is the third largest city in the state and is the county seat for Santa Clara County.  Median household income is $71,000 and above the state average.

The city is in the Santa Clara Valley at the southern end of San Francisco Bay and is bordered on the east by the Diablo Mountain Range and the Santa Cruz Range on the west.  It has a mild year round climate with low humidity.  There is wintertime rain with snow seen occasionally on the mountain tops, but it rarely freezes on the valley floor.  The summers are dry and sunny.

San Jose has a diverse population that has grown rapidly since the 1950’s as the nature of the valley changed from agricultural to technological.  It is quite suburban with many of the people who work in the Silicon Valley living here.  San Jose not only has a diverse population but great diversity in its neighborhoods as well.  Downtown San Jose is attracting new residents who want more of a city atmosphere with convenient access to places like the Tech Museum of Innovation, San Jose Museum of Art, the Children’s Discovery Museum, a thriving nightlife, performance venues for theater troupes, the San Jose Ballet, and the opera.  The MLK Library is the largest public library west of the Mississippi River and is near San Jose State University.  The San Jose Sharks, a professional hockey team, play in the downtown HP Pavilion which also hosts concerts and other sporting events.  The Sabercats, a professional arena football team, and the Stealth, a professional la crosse team, play their home games at the Pavalion as well. San Jose also has a professional soccer team, the San Jose Earthquakes.

If you are looking for other activities than sports, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum has the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts and is located not far from downtown.  The American Musical Theater of San Jose is a professional musical theater troupe that is one of the oldest in the country.  The San Jose Repertory Theatre strives to serve the community by presenting innovative productions of the classics, daring contemporary works, and new works.  The Rep moved into a new theater in the late 1990’s that was built to house the theater group.

There are numerous parks scattered throughout the city serving the needs of its residents.  These include dog parks, skate parks, two locations with swimming pools, bocce ball courts, tennis, hiking, picnicking, basketball, handball, volleyball, roller hockey, play grounds, and more.  San Jose has several large regional parks.  One of the finest is the Municipal Rose Gardens which is 5.5 acres of more than 4000 rose bushes.  Almaden Lake Park is located in south San Jose, and its sandy beach and swim area attract throngs of people when the weather turns warm.  The 32-acre lake allows boating and fishing.  Lake Cunningham has an even larger lake for boating, sailing, or fishing.  It has picnic sites that will accommodate large and small groups both.  Step into San Jose’s agricultural past at Emma Prusch Farm Park, an 86-acre working farm donated to the city in 1962.  The land for Kelley Park once belonged to a former San Jose major.  Here you can visit Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, the Japanese Friendship Gardens, and the History Park Museum.

A city of this size has many festivals and events.  The San Jose Jazz Festival is an annual event staged in downtown San Jose every summer.  The Cinco de Mayo Festival is celebrated in the Guadalupe River Park with a parade, bands, and food.  Christmas in the Park is an annual holiday tradition celebrated with hundreds of community trees and large animated displays held in Plaza de Cesar Chavez.  The Cinequest Film Festival takes place in late February with international films and digital media.

For transportation San Jose has three interstates: I-280, I-680, I-880 and one U.S. highway: US-101.  Commuters often travel on local expressways and state highways.  San Jose Mineta International Air Port is located in the north part of the city.  Rail service is through Amtrak.  Caltrain is a commuter service through San Jose from Gilroy to San Francisco.  There is a local light rail system running through downtown to Mountain View, Almaden Valley, Milpitas, and Campbell.

Several major employers have their headquarters in San Jose.  They are Adobe Systems, BEA Systems, Cisco, and eBay.  Major government employers are Santa Clara County, City of San Jose, San Jose Unified School District, and San Jose State University.  IBM, Hewlitt Packard, Hitachi, Xilinx, Kaiser Permanente, Seagate Technologies, Lockheed Martin, and KLA-Tencor all maintain a large workforce here.

The largest school system is the San Jose Unified School District for grades K-12.  There are 10 districts for elementary through middle school and one high school only district. Some of the better known private schools are Notre Dame High School, an all-girl Catholic secondary school; the Harker School, a co-ed prep school for grades K-12; and Bellermine Preparatory, an all-male Catholic secondary school - the oldest private secondary school in the state.  San Jose State University is the oldest public higher education system on the West Coast.  It’s part of the California State University system and has over 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students.  San Jose City College and Evergreen Community College are part of the state community college system.

Housing in the downtown area consists of older Victorian and Queen Ann style homes as well as new high rise condos.  The Rose Garden district, an area of charming, older homes on tree-lined streets is just west of downtown.  Other areas of San Jose are North Valley & Alum Rock where houses are typically smaller and modest.  Historic Willow Glen has a small downtown area know as The Avenue and houses are mostly 50+ years old.  West San Jose with its typical 40-50 year old ranch-style homes is highly sought after because much of it falls into two popular school systems.  The Almaden Valley and Silver Creek in Evergreen have larger homes.  Many of the homes in Silver Creek are only a few years old and have spectacular views of the surrounding hills and the valley below.
