Los Altos is a charming community located at the south end of the San Francisco Peninsula in northwestern Santa Clara County. It is bordered by Mountain View, Los Altos Hills, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Palo Alto. It was an agricultural area in its early history and remnants of an orchard can be seen at the main library. Los Altos also was a summer destination for wealthy San Franciscans who would take the train down to their summer homes. The residents enjoy not only mild, dry summers but mild, rainy winters as well.

Although it is primarily residential in nature many still consider it to be part of the Silicon Valley, especially since quite a few high tech company founders and workers live here. It has a population of 28,000 that gives it a small town feel where people know each other and have a strong sense of community. Reflecting its affluent makeup the median household income is $131,000, and its median age is 44 years. This is one community where the women outnumber the men 100 to 93 in the over 25 age category.
When the city incorporated in the 1950’s, it restricted commercial zoning to the downtown area, along El Camino Real, a half dozen shopping areas, and along the major thorough fares. This has helped to preserve the small town nature of Los Altos. It has very few sidewalks or street lights in the residential areas. Most of the houses are one-story ranch style homes.
Approximately 71 per cent of residents over 25 are college graduates. The Los Altos schools consistently rank in the top 1 per cent statewide. There is one high school, two intermediate schools, and seven elementary schools. There are several private schools for Grades K-8 including one Waldorf School. Foothill College, a California community college, is in nearby Los Altos Hills and offers associate degree programs with many of its graduates going on to attend top universities. Foothill also has an Authors Series and the Celebrity Forum Speakers which are well attended annual event series.
Los Altans enjoy many community events throughout the year. During the warmer months parts of the downtown are closed off for the weekly Farmers Market, the Arts & Wine Festival, Fall Festival, and Movies After Sundown on Friday nights. Other events are an annual Pet Parade featuring children with their pets, marching bands, and antique police cars. The Los Altos Fine Arts Show is a prestigious art show held in Lincoln Park every year in May. The Festival of Lights kicks off the holiday season right after Thanksgiving and includes a parade through the downtown with floats and marching bands. There is an annual Crab Feed to benefit the Los Altos History Museum.
