Cupertino is often called the Heart of Silicon Valley because of its location.  It’s located on the west side of Santa Clara County and part of it is flat while the western edge is in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Cupertino is very suburban in nature and has a population of 51,000.  While it lacks a downtown, it does have several major employers, fine parks, numerous restaurants, and culturally diverse shopping.  It has a diverse population with more than 40 per cent of its residents born outside of the U.S.  Median household income is just over $100,000.  The population is evenly divided between male and female. The annual rainfall averages 23 inches, and the residents enjoy mild year round temperatures with wet winters and dry summers.

The early settlers in the area planted grapes but later switched to stone fruits such as peaches, plums, cherries, and apricots.  This agricultural lifestyle later gave way to the technology boom that began in the late 1940’s.   The area incorporated in 1955 and what was once a sleepy agricultural crossroads become the city of Cupertino.

As a technocentric community it boasts one of the top school systems in the state.  There are three high schools, three middle schools, and eight elementary schools located in Cupertino.  However, both the lower and upper grade schools are part of districts that encompass several other communities.  The excellent quality of the schools influences the prices of the homes in those districts.  Cupertino is also home to De Anza College one of the largest community colleges in the state and in the top three nationwide for number of Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degrees awarded.  It offers both day and evening classes.  Many of its students go on to pursue full degrees at top universities.

Apple Computer started in Cupertino in the late 1970’s and has a large campus and headquarters not far from its original location.  Other high tech companies here are Hewlett Packard, Symantec, NetManage, Packeteer, Portal Software, and IBM.  Another major employer is the non tech Hanson Permanente located in the west side hills it produces aggregate rock and cement.

Cupertino built a new two-story, 54,000 square foot library a few years ago near the City offices.  It has a children’s reading room, group study room, computers, an outdoor reading area, and comfortable seating.  Flint Center at De Anza College provides a cultural venue for many types of performances including local performing-arts groups and tour performers as well as rock concerts, Broadway shows, symphony performances, jazz, cabaret, and chamber music.  During the summer months residents enjoy free performances of Shakespeare In The Park, Cinema at Sundown, and a Summer Concert Series all at the Memorial Park Amphitheater.  There are also numerous festivals, a citywide garage sale, and a year round farmers market.
